The school day consists of a seven period day, which includes a 25 minute Tiger Time period where students have a chance to catch up on missing work, get extra tutoring, do enrichment activities, and also attend club meetings. The remaining six periods include the basic core subjects of Math, Science, Language Arts, Reading, and Social Studies, a semester each of Health/Physical Education & computers, and an elective period.
Physical Education and Health are offered as a combined class one period each day. Students will attend Physical Education and Health an entire semester. We also offer an abstinence class that is taught during the Physical Education and Health time period. Having our Physical Education classes offered for an entire semester helps to ensure our students are forming habits which contribute to a healthy lifestyle.
Our students have the opportunity to take a variety of electives during their sixth, seventh and eighth grade years. These classes include Vocal and Instrumental Music, Hands-On Science, Yearbook, and Art. Hands-On Science, and Art are offered as semester-long classes and Instrumental and Vocal Music, and Yearbook are year-long classes.
Technology is an area that is emphasized at Hollister Middle School. We expect our staff to use it in the classrooms and our students to have as much exposure to it as possible. With the start of the 2008 school year, much of the technology in the building had been updated. Updates included document cameras for every classroom, smart boards and projectors mounted for those classrooms that didn't currently have them, new teacher computers, and a new computer lab created for teachers to assist with their classroom instruction. With the addition of the new computer lab, our student to computer ratio in the middle school will be 2 to 1.
Those students who maintain good grades and good discipline are issued privilege cards. There are three levels of privilege cards, gold, blue and white. Any student who doesn't have any D's or F's in all their classes can earn a card. Gold cards are for A's, blue cards are for all A's and B's, and white cards are for A's, B's, and/or C's. Privileges include, being the first to eat at lunch, being dismissed from school a few minutes earlier than the rest of the students, and having several freedoms during Tiger Time that other students don't have. They can also attend activities at a discounted rate.
