Classroom Management

Rituals & Procedures:

Determine (which ones?) — Teach — Practice (role play) — Provide feedback — Practice (again) — Celebrate

Sample Rituals:

Starting class • Talking (when to talk/ when to be quiet) • Moving (in seats/out of seats) • Passing out papers • Group work Ending class

Celebrations:

— Tangibles (least preferable) — Privileges (more preferable) — Social reinforcers (most preferable) ex. positive comments, handshakes, affirmations— Musical celebrations

Reasons Students Disrupt:

— Boredom — Attention (some students want this no matter what) — Power or control — Inadequacy

Sample Low-Profile Interventions

  • Eye contact • Proximity • Placing your hand on their shoulder • Lowering voice • Pausing • Signals • Using name in lesson • Pointing • Sign language Ignoring misbehavior

Consequences:

— Undesirable to student — Not physically or psychologically harmful — Logical or natural if possible — Three times – no change- don't care — May not change behavior long term

Sample Consequences:

— Loss of a privilege — Private conference with student/written reflection(What happened? How did you respond? How will you respond differently next time?)— Time out in the room or sent to another room — Parental contact- (after having built an emotional bank account earlier)— After school detention, ISS, OSS
